Lions mock draft roundup: Michigan DE Taco Charlton becoming big favorite

DETROIT — The Lions are back from the NFL Scouting Combine, out on the pro day trail and have finished their big spending in free agency. Team needs are coming more into the clear with six weeks to go until the NFL Draft, which makes evaluating possibilities all the easier.

I’ll be releasing my first mock draft next week. In the meantime, here’s a look at the mock drafts that hit the Internet this week and how certain players could fit the Lions:

Charles Harris 

Todd McShay, ESPN

Pick: Missouri DE Charles Harris

Nate’s reaction: Now that the Lions have settled their offensive line, you’re going to see lots of mock drafts giving them pass rushers. I’ve watched more Charles Harris tape than any other prospect in this draft since he played at my alma mater. I don’t think he’s a great fit for Detroit. He measured in at the NFL Scouting Combine at 253 pounds, which is small for any 4-3 end spot but especially Detroit’s. Harris has a devastating first step but doesn’t blow you away with his physical traits, and as a result, his run defense isn’t nearly as good as his pass rush. Look for him to find a better fit with a 3-4 scheme.

Takkarist Mckinley

Pick: UCLA DE Takkarist McKinley

Nate’s reaction: I’m a big fan of McKinley’s game. He’s a confident player who wants to be great at everything, even if that means playing through some pretty difficult injuries. Unfortunately for Detroit, I just am not sure he’s a 4-3 end. He measured even …
