Darius Slay leads big day for Lions defense in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — The Detroit Lions’ brightest star is Matthew Stafford, and their biggest free agents are both offensive linemen. But in their first chance to test drive the new roster against another team, it was the defense that carried the day.

And especially Darius Slay, a player who is increasingly living up to his “Big Play Slay” moniker. 

“We get tired of going against each other, looking at each other,” Slay said. ”I’m tired of guarding some of my teammates that got stink breath.”

And Slay embraced the opportunity more than anyone, neutralizing almost every receiver he lined up against in one-on-ones or team drills. He was one of the best players on the field, and he made two of the biggest plays when he picked off QB Scott Tolzien.

On the first, he tipped the ball to himself and then secured it as he dragged his toes along the sideline. A few minutes later, Slay snagged another interception after the ball caromed off another player.
